JOHN ECK
President, NBC TV Network and Media Works

John Eck was named president of the NBC TV Network and Media Works in July 2007. This appointment added executive oversight of NBC Affiliate Relations and NBC Network Operations to his portfolio of responsibilities. Eck continues his executive leadership over information technology and studio operations across NBC Universal’s extensive television networks, owned stations, and digital media properties. He also has executive responsibility for the company’s film and TV production and post-production operations. The studio operations group is the largest such operation in North America, and is one of the top operations of its kind in the world. In addition, Eck oversees the areas of sourcing, environmental health and safety, crisis management, and a multimillion-square-foot real estate and facilities portfolio, which includes Rockefeller Center, and Burbank and Universal City, California. Eck reports directly to Jeff Zucker, president and chief executive officer of NBC Universal.

Before this, Eck had served as president of Media Works and chief information officer of NBC Universal since July 2005. He was appointed to this role in conjunction with the merger that year of Information Technology and Television and Studio Operations. In addition to overseeing the formation of Media Works, Eck created the Technology Growth Center, which supports Digital Media activities, its Content Protection and Policy efforts, and the company’s research and development activities in conjunction with GE’s Global Research Center. Prior to this, Eck was president of Television and Studio Operations. He also oversaw the integration efforts of NBC Universal, formed in May 2004 through the combination of NBC and Vivendi Universal Entertainment, and played a key role in NBC’s due diligence efforts.

Eck had served as president of NBC Broadcast & Network Operations since July 1998. In this assignment, he drove a number of operational improvements, leveraging a focus on process and digital technology in NBC’s News, Sports, Entertainment and content distribution efforts. Eck’s previous assignments include serving as senior vice president and quality leader, and chief financial officer for NBC International and Business Development. In this role, he was instrumental in the structuring of NBC’s joint venture with Microsoft, which created MSNBC and MSNBC.com, and in the combination of CNBC and Dow Jones. He joined NBC in 1993 as vice president, Financial Planning and Analysis.

Eck served for two years as chairman of the Public Communications & Safety Committee, a primary working group of the Media Security and Reliability Council, which was formed by then-FCC Commissioner Michael Powell following the events of September 11, 2001. Eck is also the recipient of the distinguished Boy Scouts of America 2001 Communication Arts Industries “Good Scout” Award. He is a graduate of the David Rockefeller Fellows 2001-02 Program.

Before joining NBC, he held various financial positions with GE, including GE Capital, GE Power Generation, and GE Aircraft Engines. He started his career in GE’s Financial Management Program with GE Lighting. Eck graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business from Indiana University, where he currently serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council. He lives in Connecticut with his wife, Debbie, and their two children, Christopher and Danielle.
