President, NBC Universal International
Peter Smith was named president, NBC Universal International, in September 2006. He reports directly to Jeff Zucker, president and CEO of NBC Universal.
Based in London, Smith is responsible for spearheading international business growth opportunities for NBC Universal in partnership with key leaders in each business. His role is focused on better leveraging NBCU's existing international business by coordinating efforts across all of the company's divisions to build growth, scale and synergies.
Smith has direct operational responsibility for International TV Distribution, which is led by Belinda Menendez (who also reports to Rick Finkelstein), and for NBCU Global Networks under Olivier Gerolami (Europe), Reed Manville (Asia) and Steve Patscheck (Latin America). In addition, Smith works closely with other key executives with international responsibilities, including David Kosse (International Theatrical Marketing and Distribution), Mick Buckley (CNBC Europe), Jeremy Pink (CNBC Asia) and his successor at UPI.
Previous to his appointment in October 2006, Smith served as president, Universal Pictures International Entertainment (UPIE), since its inception in 2000, managing the operations of the home entertainment division worldwide, excluding North America. He oversaw international sales, distribution and marketing for all video and DVD product under the Universal banner. He controlled UPIE's international acquisitions, legal and business affairs, as well as commercial development and strategic planning on an international basis. UPIE has wholly-owned operating companies in 24 countries around the world and licenses product to over 30 additional international territories.
Since its beginnings in 2000, UPIE has grown steeply and under Smith's leadership - by 2003 UPIE's revenues rose dramatically by 38% from the year before, set against 19% compound market growth for the home entertainment sector as a whole. Smith and his senior management team propelled Universal to the position of home entertainment market leader in the UK, France and Benelux, with Universal in the top three distributors of each of the remaining 21 countries where Universal has an operational base.
Prior to his position as president of UPIE, Smith was Vice President, Entertainment Europe with PolyGram Filmed Entertainment (PFE) and amongst many initiatives, he was responsible for setting up operating companies in Spain and Italy, which significantly impacted upon PolyGram's European market share. Before that, Smith was divisional managing director of PolyGram Filmed Entertainment (PFE) UK, during which time PFE's revenue increased from $60 million to $160 million, establishing PolyGram as a market leader in theatrical, video and television distribution in the UK.
